Trip to the ‘world’s most visited city’ Tijuana in Baja California, Mexico on Aug. 13, 2011. Tijuana is the 42nd largest city in the Americas and is the westernmost city in Mexico. It is the largest city on the Baja California Peninsula and center of the Tijuana metropolitan area, part of the international San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. The city is the world’s most visited border city, sharing a 24-km border (15 mi) with San Diego, California, USA. Over 50 million people cross the border between these two cities every year. This metropolitan crossing makes the San Ysidro Port of Entry the busiest land-border crossing in the world. The two border crossing stations between San Diego and Tijuana account for over 300000 daily border crossings alone. For a list of tourist attractions visit, www.tijuana.com Background music: 1. Public road access to one of Baja California’s best waves, Punta Salsipuedes, is history. Surfers accustomed to giving the local family a few dollars to park and camp are now being turned away by security guards. Salsipuedes is part of the current development wave washing over coastal Northern Baja. Marketed to Americans as affordable coastal living, these developments are sprouting up from Playas de Tijuana to Ensenada. According to the daily business report, San Diego Metropolitan, once completed, “Salsipuedes will have a boutique hotel and a mix of condos, homes and estate-size lots plus a commercial village with stores, cafes and restaurants…Salsipuedes will become a retirement or vacation haven of 2680 residences and guests in the five planned village hotels.” Salsipuedes is being developed and sold by Grupo Lagza, a binational real estate development company whose goal is to “attract 80% of its clients from the United States” and who are marketing Salsi as “Baja’s Big Sur.” Recently, Surfrider’s San Diego Chapter shot down an attempt by company representatives for an endorsement of the Salsipuedes project as “surfer friendly.” Among their promises was the claim that public access would not be restricted. Public access, though guaranteed by the Mexican Constitution, is seldom enforced. According to Serge Dedina, Executive Director of WiLDCOAST, this is a problem not only for surfers but also for efforts to protect the Baja California coast. “Without coastal access

Here are two things you probably never associated: Tijuana and fine dining. It’s true, just south of the border is an exploding dining scene that goes far beyond tacos and and churros (but save room those those too!). With the help of acclaimed Tijuana chef Javier Plascencia of Mision 19, Peter steps into the kitchen to explore about a growing culinary movement called Bajamed—cuisine that relies on all the fresh and local ingredients from Baja California’s Mediterranean-like climate, sourced straight from local fisherman and farmers. Plus, he gets a cooking lesson to tempt your taste buds, and uncovers other finds, like El Restaurante en Punta Morro in Ensenada.
