Entry from: El Tecolote, Mexico Entry Title: “Isla Espiritu Santos” Entry: “Well it’s fair to say we had given the desert a thorough going over. It was now time to tackle the sea! So, once again with Walter’s assistance we chartered a small wooden speed boat with an American couple and sailed from the lovely sandy beach of El Tecolote out to Espiritu Santo which is an island about 15 kilometres offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, inhabited only by a couple of fishermen and a colony of sea lions. Our compadres for the day, Adrianna and Marco grew up in Tijuana but now live just across the US border in San Diego. They spoke fluent Spanish and were more than happy to translate so that we could understand what our enigmatic captain was saying throughout the day which was invaluable and much appreciated. We raced through the clear azure waters and across the strait in around 45 mins and began tracking around the rocky island, awesome rock faces rising up sheer from the sea. El capitan taking us into caves through narrow apertures formed into the rock by erosion, where hosts of red and yellow spotted crabs scuttled away as the boat neared them. As we continued following the shore at about 50 metres out the captain suddenly spotted movement in the water as a fin emerged from the surface. Astonishingly we had a …
It’s making new friends and taking new adventures that we cherish most. Our appreciation of local culture is most profound just minutes from the future Azul de Cortez marina in La Paz, an authentic seaside community with rarely a tourist to be found. It’s the welcoming people of La Paz who really set it apart, not to mention the finest collection of eateries on the Baja.

Entry from: San Jose del Cabo, Mexico Entry Title: “The first Full Day” Entry: “Wow! This place is beautiful. We got in yesterday afternoon after a four hour flight from Seattle. Spent yesterday afternoon fighting off timeshare-oil salesmen (they’re thick as stink on a manure wagon as you’re leaving the airport). Finally got to “here”, got checked in and then ran up to the Mega (a mexican version of Walmart) for the week’s groceries. Dinner was tuna fish sandwiches and chips. After that we both just crashed. We have a one room villa with a veranda that looks out over the pool, courtyard, and bright blue ocean. We’re facing the Sea of Cortez (east side of Baja) and if we’re up early enough can watch the sun come up. The room is big and very nice. Sleeps four so there is plenty of room (makes us wonder what we’re doing here by ourselves…). The weather is between high 70s – low 80s and there’s a nice breeze coming off the ocean. NO RAIN OR SNOW IN SIGHT! Today we figured out what we’re planning on doing the rest of the week, spent time at the pool, took a nap (Gina), practiced our Spanish (Rosetta Stone/Kelly), took a taxi into San Jose and are now kicking back wondering what we’re having for dinner. Lunch was here at the resort … great fish tacos and somewhat messy chicken nachos (not a fan of too …
Every year 2 million people travel to Baja California, but there are many adventures off the beaten path that few get to experience. Step one, don’t just down a margarita. Baja has the oldest and largest wine-producing region in the Americas. Wine enthusiasts will find working vineyards and wine-making classes, and more. And Baja California is not just for oenophiles. Foodies can enjoy from street food to seasonal local Bajamed cuisine. Beyond the resort towns there are small villages on and off the water, like La Paz and Todos Santos, that give you a taste of authentic Baja life, while oceanside resorts help you completely disconnect from everyday life. And last, but certainly not least, there are opportunities to create one-of-a-kind souvenirs when you explore Baja’s unique glass-making traditions. Entry from: Agua Verde Baja California, Mexico Entry Title: “Jottings from Agua Verde” Entry: “No time to update right now… so here’s a wee snippet I jotted on our last night whilst drinking a cup of tea on the rock shore line, watching for dolphins and wishing we weren’t leaving the next day: The pelicans push forward, grimacing into the salted wind. Eyes fixed on the rolling swells below. The sea is stickled by the afternoon air; unpredictable and sudden. Like the toro, it lurks in the canyons, whispering to the osprey and vultures. Maddened, it charges through the slotted corridors, ripping away all in it’s path: the arroyo. A prehistoric land, all ages of stones and shells darkened by the pointed spread of the pelican’s shadows. They fly in unison, single file, riding the air streams of each others tattered wings. The shape they stamp on the ground is angular and strange, but no less familiar to the crags and juts of their habitat. Beyond the beach, through spiny pathways worn by cbaca and burro stretches miles of arid mesa still littered with the palo verde trees once used by ancient civilizations to make tea. And as they ground their flour on the stones still squatting in the caves, the elemental changes have ground down the sierra, leaving deep wounds and gorges healed over with cacti and …
